The Scenario

Jessica and Savanna are sisters in their mid thirties and have a very close relationship with their Dad, who has been their primary caretaker for most of their life. Unfortunately, they have just received the tragic news of the passing of their father. Jessica and Savanna have no idea where to start and are overwhelmed with the news of the passing, and the planning they know is associated with the passing of a loved one.

The Solution

Allow yourself to grieve

This is a time of shock and high emotions, allow yourself to feel and understand your emotions are real and part of this difficult time. Grieving takes many forms and having a therapist to help you through the grieving process is always a good idea.

Look at the Will

Looking at the Will of their father may give Jessica and Savanna information on a variety of important information going forward. This would include potential money to help offset funeral costs, information on the executor of the will, and any other assets that may be transferrable to Jessica and Savanna. The will may also have instructions pertaining to the funeral and may give clarity on how to proceed with the funeral

Make Funeral Arrangements

Making funeral arrangements is never an easy task for anybody, but should be done immediately. Reaching out and starting the process with the funeral director is difficult, but will allow for time to adequately plan for a funeral while going through the emotions of a loss of a loved one.

Transfer of Assets

Savanna and Jessica should talk to their Lawyer, Accountant, and Financial Advisor to help sort out any of the complicated underwritings of transferring assets that have been underlined in the will. Having a strong team of caring professionals will aid in the planning and execution of decisions during this tragic time.
